Situated in the western part of Ukraine, Lviv, the “City of Lions,” is its heart and soul. Founded in the 13th c. by King Danylo Halytskyi, it was named in honor of his son Lev (Leo).  Through centuries of Polish, Austrian and Soviet occupation, Lviv was the gateway to “the East,” but with Ukraine’s independence in 1991, Lviv is finally free to develop its own identity.

Here, in the year 1000, a Roman Catholic bishopric was founded. Here, the royal castle was constructed on Wawel Hill, which became the site of coronations and burials of kings, since Krakow was the capital of Poland from 11-17th century. Today, city life focuses around the Market Square, the second largest in Europe after St. Mark's in Venice.

Renaissance, Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque edifices stand side by side in a city considered the artistic capital of Poland. Afternoon and evening/ dinner under own arrangements.

May 24, Thu Krakow/Budapest   B/D

This morning we will visit the Underground Museum of Krakow, a unique museum underneath Rynek Glowny (Main Market Square), opened September 24th. This museum was built on the site of an archaeological excavation that unveiled secrets of Krakow's evolution since its founding in the early Middle Ages. Visitors can walk underground from the main exhibit area to other exhibit chambers over a glass-bottomed footbridge that allows them to see below elements of medieval architecture and road paving. The corridor takes the visitor past the Wealth Stalls and even older stalls from the 12th Century. Afternoon free and dinner in Chlopske Yadlo – a typical Polish restaurant.
