May 19 Sunday
PARIS Ukrainian Day
After breakfast, we join our touring coach for transfer to the Cathedral of Saint Volodymyr the Great, the cathedral church of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy in France. Since 2012, the eparchial bishop has been Bishop Borys Gudziak. Today Rev. Ihor Royik will co-celebrate Divine Liturgy with local Ukrainian priests.
In 1937, the creation of a mission for Ukrainian Catholics culminated in the 1943 awarding of the chapel on Boulevard Saint Germain as a Catholic Church of Byzantine Ukrainian Rite. In 1960, the Holy See created an apostolic exarchate for the Ukrainian Greco-Catholics of France, with Msgr Volodymyr Malanczuk as Evque. This raised Saint Volodymyr the Great Church to the level of cathedral. Between 1983 and 2012, Bishop Mykhail Hrynchyshyn C.S.S.R was the Apostolic Exarch. In December 2012, Bishop Borys Gudziak, who previously was Rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University (Lviv), was appointed Apostolic Exarch. On January 19, 2013, Pope Benedict XVI elevated this parish to an apostolic exarchate for Ukrainians of Byzantine rite residing in France.
Saint Volodymyr the Great Church in Paris serves as a refuge for all waves of Ukrainian immigration. It has become the center of spiritual, cultural, and political life, as Ukrainian statesmen visiting Paris often make their appearances there. It is here that the Ukrainian community gathers together to celebrate Christmas, with a living nativity called ‘Vertep’, as well as Easter, Saint Nicolas, Mother’s Day, Independence Day of Ukraine.
After Mass, we rejoin our touring coach and continue to the town of Senlis.
You will have time to enjoy the city and have lunch in one of the local cafes.
Senlis is a commune in the northern French department of Oise. The monarchs of the early French dynasties lived in Senlis, known for its Gothic cathedral and other historical monuments. It was the seat of the French monarchy when Yaroslav the Wise, the Grand Prince of Kyiv, married his daughter Anna to King Henry I of France in the 11th century. In Senlis, Anna of Kyiv, Queen of France, established St. Vincent’s Abbey. In 2013, the Ukrainian community acquired the church of Sts. Borys and Hlib. With the restoration of the church and abbey, the buildings will become the Anna Yaroslavna Cultural Center. Many functions will take place here, and future plans are to establish the Anna Yaroslavna museum in this little town.
After a short tour of this lovely town, we return to Paris for overnight and dinner at a local café.

The palace is now a historical monument, known for the ceremonial Hall of Mirrors, the jewel-like Royal Opera, the royal apartments, the more intimate royal residences, the Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon located within the park and the vast Gardens of Versailles with fountains, canals, and geometric flower beds and groves.
